What We're About

In order for one’s few days on this earth to merit the high accolade, “No Greater Life”; three questions must be answered. And they must be answered from a perspective that is governed by the realities of eternity and not just of time. As the Russian philosopher Dostoevsky put it, “Life in time remains without meaning if it does not find its meaning in eternity.” Far more importantly though are the words of Jesus Himself, “Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures unto eternal life.” Jn. 6:27

What is the life that
satisfies deepest?

What is that life which brings the keen awareness of a joyous satisfaction which goes down deeper in the human spirit than anything else this fleeting earth is able to offer?

“Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance.”  Is. 55:2

There is an unrivaled depth of supernatural joy and contentment jealously reserved only for those who are willing to give Christ the opportunity to have full sway in their lives.

J. Campbell White put it well, “Nothing can wholly satisfy the life of Christ within His followers except the adoption of Christ’s purpose toward the world He came to redeem. Fame, pleasure, and riches are but husks and ashes in contrast with the boundless and abiding joy of working with God for the fulfillment of His eternal plans.”

What is the life that
lasts longest?

This is the second great question. What is that life whose footprints will never be erased by the tide of time and whose eternal legacy will never be in danger of termination or downsizing. Like Abel, it is a life which warrants the words, “he being dead still speaks.” Heb. 11:4

The great life makes a difference in time and that is a wonderful thing. But the greatest life makes a difference in time and in eternity. As William James noted, “The greatest use of life is to spend it on something that will outlast it.”

There are only 2 things God has promised will last for eternity – the word of God and the souls of men. Therefore, the greatest life must traffic heavily in both those eternal commodities.

What is the life that influences greatest?

What is that life whose impact on others goes deeper and lasts longer than any other? We can have influence in many different ways upon many different people throughout our lifetime. Upon these people we can have financial influence, job influence, social influence, health influence, etc. We can have huge influence in each of these arenas and that is a wonderful privilege. But there is only one kind of influence that matters most. It is the God-engendered influence that provides men and women with “new hearts” (Ez. 36:26) and an eternally significant purpose in life that dwarfs all other purposes. (Eph. 2:10). It is this purpose in life that towers over all other competing purposes. The reason? It is the one and only life which brings maximum glory to God, radical change to others, and unexpected joy to ourselves.
